Course code : HUM110

Course Description

Course

The Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), entitled “Codex and Code: Classical and Digital Approaches to Greek Palaeography,” aims to establish an international educational framework for the study of Greek palaeography by combining classical and digital approaches to the investigation of manuscripts and written cultural heritage.

The programme comprises an online preparatory phase followed by an intensive period of in-person teaching in Patmos, drawing on the island’s unique manuscript and monastic tradition as an exceptional environment for learning. The educational programme combines theoretical lectures, workshops, and practical training using both original manuscript material and digitised resources.

Thematically, the programme covers areas such as Greek Palaeography, Codicology, Papyrology, Digital Palaeography, and the Digital Humanities, introducing participants both to traditional methods of reading, describing, dating, and interpreting manuscripts and to contemporary digital techniques and tools, including OCR, Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), TEI/XML, metadata, digital research infrastructures, and computational methods of analysis.

The programme is addressed to graduate, postgraduate students, and doctoral candidates. It seeks to develop research, digital, and intercultural skills while strengthening the internationalisation of the Department and its engagement with current developments at the intersection of the Humanities and Digital Technologies.
