Imaging biological phenomena in cells, tissues and whole organisms is the central technology platform in life sciences and has contributed to more groundbreaking technologies than any other biomedical technology. Bioimaging technologies and applications impinge on every facet and area of modern biological and medical research. Imaging and microscopy approaches have become indispensable tools for everyday science activities, facilitating basic research, but also allowing, for the first time, the direct visualization of the molecular basis of devastating human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders, in living cells and tissues, in real time.
