The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the principles of blockchain technology and the particulars of cryptocurrencies, with a little peak into other related financial innovations, such as NFTs and CBDCs. In a holistic approach, students will explore the nature of cryptocurrencies and the limitations and potentials of blockchain applications, with a focus on finance.

Topics

The topics covered include, but are not limited to:

• History of money, first attempts to introduce cryptocurrencies
• Properties of blockchain technology and blockchain operation
• Basics of cryptography as used in cryptocurrencies
• Characteristics of cryptocurrencies: money, speculative assets, store of value.
• Decentralized vs. centralized system of digital/ cryptocurrency management.
• Stable (backed by some asset or currency) vs. unstable cryptocurrencies.
• Examples of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and projects such as Libra/Diem.
• Issues related to cryptocurrencies such as financial regulation, anonymity, tax-related issues, criminalization, etc.
• Uses of cryptocurrencies
• Developments related to or following in the wakre of cryptocurrencies (NFTs, CBDC, etc.).
